OCR: In society, it doesn't matter what you love or hate as long as you behave yourself. Community stokes fame. Society dampens it. Pure and simple society will reject a communal hero who is a murderer, say, or who dresses inappropriately. Pure and simple community gladly excuses its heroes' fail- ings, no matter how grave, because doing so affirms the priority of the values that the heroes stand for. But society and community are rarely unalloyed with each other - fortunately. (Each is monstrous otherwise.) American fame industries feed on overlappings of com- munities and society, playing tones of idolatry and judgement against each other.
